DOP Day Rates in London: What to Budget for a Director of Photography

One of the most common questions producers ask when planning a shoot is: what does a Director of Photography actually cost? DOP rates in London vary considerably depending on experience, the type of production, and whether the cinematographer supplies their own equipment. This guide gives you a realistic picture of what to expect.
What is the average DOP day rate in London?
For an experienced Director of Photography working on commercial productions in London, day rates typically fall between £700 and £2,000. The range reflects the significant variation in experience levels, production types and whether the DOP is supplying their own camera package.
As a rough guide to the London market in 2025:
Entry-level or emerging DOP: £300–£500 per day (labour only)
Mid-level DOP with commercial experience: £600–£900 per day (labour only)
Experienced DOP with 10+ years and strong credits: £900–£1,500 per day (labour only)
Senior DOP on high-end commercial or drama: £1,500–£2,500+ per day
Owner-operator rates: when the DOP brings their own kit
Many experienced DOPs in London own their own professional camera package. When a DOP supplies their own equipment — camera body, lenses, accessories — they charge a combined rate covering both their labour and the kit. This is known as an owner-operator rate.
Owner-operator rates are often highly cost-effective for productions. Instead of paying a DOP day rate plus a separate equipment hire from a rental house, you pay one combined rate to the cinematographer. For a DOP supplying an Arri Alexa package in London, a combined owner-operator rate typically ranges from £1,200 to £2,500 per day depending on the kit package and the DOP's experience level.
The savings can be substantial. A rental house Arri Alexa package alone can cost £800–£1,500 per day before you've paid anyone to operate it.
What affects DOP rates in London?
Several factors influence what a Director of Photography charges:
Experience and credits: A DOP with 20 years of commercial credits and BAFTA-recognised work will command a higher rate than someone five years into their career. Experience brings speed, problem-solving and a creative contribution that genuinely affects the quality of the final film.
Production type: High-end TVCs and branded content for major agencies tend to operate on higher budgets than low-budget narrative projects or social content. The rate reflects the commercial value of the work.
Shoot duration: Multi-day shoots are often negotiated at a reduced daily rate. A DOP might charge £1,000 per day for a one-day shoot but £800 per day for a five-day production.
Equipment supply: Whether the DOP is supplying their own camera kit is a major factor. An owner-operator is typically more economical than labour-only plus separate rental.
Turnaround and prep: Complex productions requiring extensive pre-production, technical recces or overnight turnarounds will factor into the overall rate.
Half-day rates and short form rates
For shorter shoots, many DOPs offer a half-day rate — typically around 60–70% of the full day rate — for shoots of four hours or fewer. For very short social content or talking-head shoots, some cinematographers offer a fixed-rate package that covers a set number of hours and a basic equipment package.
It is worth being transparent about the expected shoot length from the outset. Underestimating the day and running into overtime can become expensive — most DOPs charge 1.5x their hourly rate for overtime beyond the agreed hours.
Is a higher day rate worth it?
Almost always, yes — within reason. A highly experienced DOP works faster, wastes fewer takes, brings ideas you haven't thought of, and delivers footage that needs less fixing in post. The cost of a senior DOP is often offset by a shorter shoot day, a more efficient crew, and a final film that better serves its commercial purpose.
The most expensive thing on any production is a bad decision on set. An experienced Director of Photography is there to prevent that.
