London is one of the world's leading cities for commercial video production. From major TV advertising campaigns to branded content for global brands, the city's production infrastructure — its studios, locations, crew and equipment houses — is world-class. If you're planning a commercial shoot in London and working with a Director of Photography for the first time, here's what to expect.

Getting the Brief Right

The most important part of any commercial production happens before a camera is switched on. A clear, detailed creative brief — with visual references, a defined audience, a messaging hierarchy and a realistic budget — allows your Director of Photography to genuinely contribute to the creative process, not just execute instructions.

Share everything: the script or storyboard, the director's treatment, the brand guidelines, the tone-of-voice document. The DOP needs to understand not just what the film will show, but what it needs to feel like. That emotional brief is often more useful than a technical one.

The Tech Recce: Why It Matters

A technical recce — or location scout — is a visit to the shoot location with the director, DOP, production designer and key heads of department. It's where the creative plan meets physical reality. A good Director of Photography will use the recce to assess the available light at different times of day, identify potential problems, plan the lighting rig, and work out how to make the space look as good as possible.

In London, locations range from period architecture in the City to modern glass office buildings in Canary Wharf, converted warehouses in Hackney to luxury residential spaces in Chelsea. Each presents different lighting challenges and opportunities. An experienced London DOP will have worked in most of these environments and can adapt quickly.

Camera and Equipment: What Your DOP Will Use

The choice of camera and lens package has a significant impact on the look and feel of a commercial. High-end commercials in London are frequently shot on Arri Alexa or Sony Venice systems, paired with vintage or anamorphic lenses for a particular aesthetic. Your DOP will recommend an equipment package based on the creative brief, the locations and the post-production workflow.

Some experienced DOPs — including Kris Brady — are owner-operators who supply their own professional camera package. This can be a significant advantage for productions on a tighter budget: you get an experienced cinematographer who knows their kit inside out, without the additional cost of a separate camera hire.

On the Day: How a Commercial Shoot Runs

A commercial shoot day in London typically runs 10–12 hours. The DOP will usually arrive early to oversee the lighting rig and camera setup before the rest of the crew and talent arrive. Once shooting begins, the director and DOP work in close collaboration: the director focuses on performance and storytelling, while the DOP concentrates on the image.

A well-run shoot is fast and decisive. Shot lists help, but experienced DOPs are also adaptable — when a location throws up an unexpected opportunity, or when schedule changes mean a scene needs to be shot differently, a seasoned cinematographer finds solutions quickly and keeps the day moving.

Post-Production: The DOP's Involvement After the Shoot

Many DOPs are involved in the colour grade — the post-production process where the footage is colour-corrected and given its final look. A Director of Photography will often attend the grade alongside the director to ensure the visual intent of the shoot is preserved in the final film. This continuity between the shoot and the grade is one of the hallmarks of a well-produced commercial.
